In this edition of *Inside the BIP Workshops*, we focus on the **Heavy Duty Morticer**—a machine built to cut clean, square holes in wood for strong and seamless joints. --- ### 🪚 **What is a Heavy Duty Morticer?** The **Heavy Duty Morticer** is used to cut **square or rectangular holes (called mortises)** into wood—essential for joints in furniture, doors, framing, and more. Unlike circular drills, this tool creates clean, straight-edged holes that perfectly match the tenon for a snug fit. At BIP, students learn to use this machine as part of their joinery and carpentry training, developing both technique and discipline. - ![Heavy Duty Motiser (2)](https://www.busogaip.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(2).jpeg?width=1920&height=2560&name=Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(2).jpeg) Hover message - ![Heavy Duty Motiser (4)](https://www.busogaip.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(4).jpeg?width=2560&height=1920&name=Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(4).jpeg) Hover message - ![Heavy Duty Motiser (8)](https://www.busogaip.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(8).jpeg?width=2560&height=1920&name=Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(8).jpeg) Hover message - ![Heavy Duty Motiser (14)-1](https://www.busogaip.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(14)-1.jpeg?width=2560&height=1920&name=Heavy%20Duty%20Motiser%20(14)-1.jpeg) Hover message   --- ### ⚙️ **How It Works: Step-by-Step** Here’s how students are trained to use the morticer safely and accurately: 1. **Prepare the Material:** The wood piece is placed and secured on the morticer’s table. 2. **Select the Right Chisel and Jig:** Students choose the proper chisel size and install the jig for guiding the cuts. 3. **Gear Up for Safety:** Gloves and eye protection are a must before starting. 4. **Start Off-Workpiece:** The machine starts away from the wood, then the chisel is **lowered gradually into the material**. 5. **Follow the Markings:** Using the jig as a guide, students move the chisel carefully to form accurate mortises. 6. **Clear as You Go:** Chippings are removed between cuts to maintain clean lines and prevent jamming. --- ### 🎓 **What Students Learn** Training on the heavy duty morticer builds: - **Precision joinery skills** - **Confidence with chisels and cutting jigs** - **Workshop safety habits** - **Understanding of structural woodworking** These are essential abilities in carpentry, furniture making, and interior wood construction. --- ### 🛠️ **Where Accuracy Meets Strength** The morticer isn’t about speed—it’s about **getting the cut right**. At BIP, students practice slow, deliberate movements that result in strong, clean joints—because every successful structure starts with solid connections. --- ### 🚀 **Want to Build with Confidence?** Join BIP and get trained on machines that teach more than technique—they build careers. 👉 Apply now and start mastering the tools of the trade. ### Submit Student Application Form #### BIP Author ## Recommended For You [![](https://www.busogaip.com/hubfs/20250806_152022.jpg)](https://www.busogaip.com/post/inside-the-bip-workshops-router) [Engineering](https://www.busogaip.com/post/tag/engineering) 1 Min Read ### [Inside the BIP Workshops: Router](https://www.busogaip.com/post/inside-the-bip-workshops-router) [BIP Aug 6, 2025, 11:16:27 AM](https://www.busogaip.com/post/author/bip) [![](https://www.busogaip.com/hubfs/IMG_E8218.webp)](https://www.busogaip.com/post/inside-the-bip-workshops-wood-lathe-machine) [Engineering](https://www.busogaip.com/post/tag/engineering) [Construction](https://www.busogaip.com/post/tag/construction) 1 Min Read ### [Inside the BIP Workshops: Wood Lathe Machine](https://www.busogaip.com/post/inside-the-bip-workshops-wood-lathe-machine) [BIP May 27, 2025, 8:42:03 AM](https://www.busogaip.com/post/author/bip) [![](https://www.busogaip.com/hubfs/20250917_094731.jpg)](https://www.busogaip.com/post/why-safety-goggles-matter-protecting-the-eyes-that-power-your-future) [Engineering](https://www.busogaip.com/post/tag/engineering) [Student Life](https://www.busogaip.com/post/tag/student-life) 2 Min Read ### [Why Safety Goggles Matter: Protecting the Eyes That Power Your Future](https://www.busogaip.com/post/why-safety-goggles-matter-protecting-the-eyes-that-power-your-future) [BIP Sep 23, 2025, 1:33:59 PM](https://www.busogaip.com/post/author/bip) ![BIP logo - pink new small](https://www.busogaip.com/hs-fs/hubfs/BIP%20logo%20-%20pink%20new%20small.png?width=200&height=73&name=BIP%20logo%20-%20pink%20new%20small.png) At **Busoga International Polytechnic (BIP)**, we equip individuals with the skills, qualifications, and hands-on experience needed to thrive in engineering and construction.
