When it comes to shaping and detailing wood, few tools offer as much versatility as the Router. In this edition of Inside the BIP Workshops, we explore how this machine helps BIP students create everything from structural joints to decorative designs.
🪚 What is a Router?
The Router is a powerful woodworking tool that uses rotating bits to cut grooves, dadoes, rabbets, and decorative edges in wood—and sometimes even in plastics or soft metals. It’s a must-have for cabinet making, furniture construction, and precision joinery.
At BIP, students learn how to handle the router with skill, precision, and the safety practices that keep projects—and people—intact.
⚙️ How It Works: Student Training Steps
Here’s the standard process taught at BIP for safe and accurate router operation:
- Choose the Bit: Select the appropriate cutting bit for the type of groove, joint, or shape needed and secure it in the collet.
- Adjust the Fence or Template: Set up guides to ensure a clean and accurate cut.
- Secure the Workpiece: The material is clamped firmly to prevent movement.
- Start Off the Workpiece: With a steady grip, the router is switched on away from the wood and then lowered gently into position.
- Make the Cut: Students guide the router along the fence or template, maintaining consistent pressure and speed. The bit does the cutting—forcing the tool risks damaging the material.
- Lift Off Gradually: At the end of the cut, the router is carefully lifted while still running to prevent tearing, then switched off.
🎓 What Students Learn
Training with the router helps students develop:
- Precision woodworking and detailing skills
- Confidence in using fences, guides, and templates
- Understanding of joinery types and applications
- Patience and control for high-quality finishes
These skills translate directly into carpentry, cabinetry, and custom woodworking careers.
🛠️ Precision in Every Pass
The router’s versatility makes it a core tool in woodworking. At BIP, students learn not just to operate it—but to use it for clean, professional-grade results.
