Whether in construction, welding, electrical installations, or mechanical engineering, safety is a constant part of technical training at Busoga International Polytechnic.
Students are taught how to use equipment correctly, wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), identify hazards, and follow procedures designed to protect both people and property.
But what do students themselves think about workplace safety?
We asked several learners to share their perspectives on why safety matters and what can happen when safety rules are ignored.
⚠️ “Failure to Follow Procedures Can Lead to Accidents”
For Nakitende Jamilah, workplace safety is about preventing injuries before they happen.
She believes that ignoring safety procedures can have serious consequences for workers and those around them.
“Hazards such as falling objects can cause serious harm if proper precautions are not taken,” she explains.
Jamilah also emphasizes that safety is a personal responsibility. In her view, every worker has a duty to follow safety measures and protect themselves while carrying out their tasks.
Her perspective highlights an important principle found across many industries: safety starts with individual actions.
🦺 “The Right PPE Can Prevent Serious Injuries”
Lukyamuzi Benard believes one of the most important aspects of workplace safety is selecting the correct Personal Protective Equipment for each task.
According to him, understanding the nature of the work and wearing appropriate PPE significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
He points out that protective equipment helps safeguard workers from common workplace hazards, including falling objects, electrical risks, and other dangers that may be present on site.
For Benard, PPE is not simply part of a uniform—it is an essential layer of protection that allows people to work safely and confidently.
🔧 “Safety Is About Protecting Everyone”
For Ehaab Tariq, workplace safety goes beyond personal protection.
He believes safety involves wearing the correct PPE, using the right equipment for the task, and following proper procedures throughout the work process.
According to Tariq, ignoring safety measures does not only put one individual at risk.
“It can also endanger colleagues and others nearby,” he explains.
This is why he believes every worker should make safety a personal priority, regardless of their role or level of experience.

Although each student focused on different aspects of workplace safety, their views share a common theme: responsibility.
Safety is not only about avoiding accidents.
It is about respecting procedures, protecting coworkers, maintaining professional standards, and creating an environment where everyone can work effectively.
