Hands-On Learning: Student Site Visits to Harris Engineering and MIK Technical Consult

Recently, our students embarked on an enriching journey as part of their "Construction Methods and Techniques" unit, visiting two incredible projects. These visits provided hands-on learning experiences and insights into various construction techniques.

Visit to Harris Engineering Ltd - Pearl Next Lounge, Walukuba, Jinja

Engineer: ENG. Buwasi Elly

Building Type: Low-rise

During this visit, students learned a variety of construction techniques, including concrete mix designs and ratios, block manufacturing and laying, material selection and storage, timber-slab construction, and the installation of building services like water and electricity.

The students were thoroughly briefed and ensured they had their full PPE on. ENG. Buwasi Elly guided them around the site, explaining each construction stage in detail. Despite a brief interruption by heavy rain, the students resumed their learning with enthusiasm. They asked insightful questions, and the engineer provided valuable guidance.

Visit to MIK Technical Consult - Mixed Use Development, Bugembe, Jinja

Engineer: ENG. Mikago Grace

Building Type: Low-rise

At this site, students were exposed to pad foundation construction, slab shuttering, material storage on site, and ground floor construction with BRC reinforcement.

ENG. Mikago Grace briefed the students, ensured they had their full PPE on, and guided them around the site. The students were keen to learn and asked numerous questions, which the engineer answered comprehensively. This hands-on experience was invaluable in helping them understand the practical aspects of their studies.

Overall Experience

The entire visit lasted about 5 hours, split between two groups led by two trainers per group. This experience not only enriched the students' knowledge but also provided them with a real-world perspective on construction techniques.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights from our educational journeys!
